My Spectrum School approaches gifted and talented education with an innovative vision of pedagogy that combines contemporary theories of learning with effective teaching methods. Our philosophy is based on the concept that each child exhibits a unique profile of different abilities, or spectrum of intelligences, based on Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences and Harvard University's Project Spectrum research studies. Our curriculum emphasizes identifying children's areas of strength and using this information as the basis for an individualized educational program.

My Spectrum School's advanced Long Island gifted programs include:

  • Harvard University Project Spectrum and Theory of Multiple Intelligences frameworks
  • Utilization of the seven domains of knowledge: language, math, science, art, music, social understanding, and movement aligned with New York State Next Generation Learning Standards
  • Individual and group learning activities to foster critical and creative thinking skills
  • Prepared learning environment as a teaching tool for exploration and discovery
  • Small class size facilitated by highly educated staff
  • On-going involvement from parents and community partners
  • Theme-based project learning

Toddler (Ages 18 months - 35 months)

Our Toddler program provides a gradual transition from home to school and is designed with a multi-sensory approach to learning by introducing the seven domains of knowledge through exploration and experimentation. Our emergent curriculum follows children’s interests, abilities, and inquiries and implements thematic hands-on activities and project based learning. Teachers encourage children to engage in rich children’s literature, blocks and construction, puppet theater, music and movement, literacy and writing, language immersion, visual arts, indoor/outdoor play and exercise. Children embrace a positive attitude toward learning to acquire independence and self- confidence while enhancing their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Teachers support their development by directing and encouraging creative play in a safe nurturing environment encompassed with a mirage of resources and materials. Ongoing assessment reflects observation and documentation and adjusts to meet the needs of children. Teachers encourage potty training as a positive collaboration between family and school and assist with maintaining a potty schedule.
